What We Do

Kitchen Design That Solves Problems Before Construction Begins

Every kitchen remodel starts as an idea — more counter space, better storage, an island that actually fits, a layout that does not dead-end at the refrigerator. The gap between that idea and a finished kitchen is where most projects go wrong: orders placed before the layout was confirmed, cabinets that arrive and do not close out the run, an island that works on paper but blocks the dishwasher door in real life. Kitchen design is the step that closes that gap.

Kitchen Remodeling Mankato provides professional kitchen design services that go well beyond a sketch on graph paper. We measure your existing kitchen precisely, model it in design software, and produce a scaled floor plan showing cabinet placement, appliance locations, walkway clearances, and the work triangle. For most projects, we take that floor plan into a 3D rendering that lets you see the finished kitchen — cabinet finish, countertop material, backsplash, lighting, and all — before a single product is ordered. Changes in the design phase cost nothing. Changes after the cabinets ship cost real money.

We have worked through the design challenges specific to Mankato-area homes: the soffit-heavy kitchens of 1970s and 1980s ranch homes throughout Hilltop and South Mankato, the narrow galley configurations in older craftsman properties near Sibley Park, and the wide-open layouts of newer construction off Lookout Drive and in the developments near Eagle Lake. Each kitchen gets a design that works with its specific structure — not a standard template applied regardless of the space.

Design Services

From First Sketch to Construction-Ready Drawings

Our kitchen design services cover every phase of the planning process — from the initial layout concept through the final documents your trades need to execute the build without ambiguity.

Scaled Floor Plans

Precisely measured and drawn floor plans showing cabinet runs, appliance placement, island footprint, walkway widths, and clearances. Every dimension is verified against your actual kitchen before the plan is finalized.

3D Kitchen Renderings

Photorealistic 3D visualizations of your finished kitchen. See your cabinet finish, countertop material, backsplash tile, flooring, and lighting all together before any product is ordered. Iterate on finishes and layouts without commitment.

Layout Optimization

Analysis of your current kitchen layout against the work triangle principle, traffic flow, and functional zone planning. We identify inefficiencies in your existing arrangement and model alternatives that make the same footprint work significantly better.

Material & Finish Specification

A complete written specification of every material, product, and finish in your design — cabinet line, door style, countertop material, backsplash tile, flooring, hardware, and fixtures. Contractors and suppliers use this document to quote and order without ambiguity.

Project Phasing & Scheduling

A sequenced project timeline that coordinates cabinet lead times, countertop templating windows, trade scheduling, and permit inspection milestones. Built into the design deliverable so every phase of your Mankato remodel stays on track.

Our Process

How Mankato Kitchen Design Works

From your first call to a set of approved drawings ready for construction — here is exactly how we move a Mankato kitchen from concept to build-ready.

Free In-Home Consultation & Measurement

We visit your Mankato home, take precise measurements of your existing kitchen, document window and door locations, note ceiling height variations, and photograph the space from multiple angles. We discuss your goals for the remodel — what is not working, what you want more of, your preferred style direction, and your budget range. There is no charge for this visit and no obligation to proceed.

Existing Layout Analysis

Back in our design environment, we model your current kitchen as-built. We analyze the work triangle between refrigerator, sink, and range; identify dead zones and poorly used corners; flag any code clearance violations in the current layout; and note structural elements that will affect where walls can or cannot move. This analysis shapes the design brief before we begin drawing the new layout.

Layout Concept & Floor Plan Delivery

We deliver an initial scaled floor plan within 5–7 business days showing our recommended layout — cabinet runs, island position if applicable, appliance locations, and walkway dimensions. For more complex projects or when the layout decision involves structural changes, we may present two alternative configurations for comparison. You review, give feedback, and we revise until the layout is exactly right before moving to 3D.

3D Rendering & Material Selection

Once the floor plan is approved, we build the 3D model and populate it with your chosen finishes. We bring physical samples of cabinet door styles, countertop slabs, backsplash tile, and flooring to your home so you can evaluate materials in your actual kitchen light rather than a showroom. The 3D render is updated to reflect your final selections, giving you a photorealistic preview of the finished kitchen before any order is placed. If you want to see how a different countertop material looks, we update the render — no cost, no commitment.

Construction Documents & Specifications

With the design approved, we produce the full construction document set: dimensioned floor plan, elevation drawings for each wall, electrical plan showing outlet, switch, and fixture locations, and a complete material specification sheet. If your project requires a building permit — which most structural changes and electrical upgrades do — these documents are formatted for submission to the City of Mankato building department. Permit-ready drawings eliminate the back-and-forth that delays many Mankato remodels at the start of construction.

Handoff to Construction & Trade Coordination

For full-service remodel clients, the approved design package is handed directly to our construction team as the binding project specification. For design-only clients, you receive the complete document set to take to your chosen contractor. Either way, every trade involved in your project — cabinet installer, countertop fabricator, electrician, plumber — works from the same set of drawings, which eliminates the interpretation gaps that cause most mid-project mistakes. If questions arise during construction, we are available to clarify design intent without additional charge.

Before & After

A South Mankato Kitchen Redesigned From the Floor Plan Up

Original 1986 split-level kitchen — peninsula blocking natural light, awkward refrigerator placement, and soffits dropping to 7 feet throughout
Completed redesign — peninsula removed, refrigerator relocated, soffits opened to ceiling height, and full-height cabinet wall installed with crown detail

When the Layout Was the Problem: Redesigning a South Mankato Split-Level Kitchen

The owners of this 1986 South Mankato split-level had updated the cabinet fronts a decade prior, but the kitchen had never worked well. The peninsula created a dead-end that forced everyone coming from the dining room to loop around to reach the refrigerator. The refrigerator itself was wedged into a corner where the door only opened about 100 degrees before hitting the adjacent cabinet. Soffits dropped to seven feet, making the already-compact kitchen feel oppressive.

They came to us not wanting a full gut remodel — just a better kitchen. During the design consultation, we identified that removing the peninsula and relocating the refrigerator to the opposite wall would free up significant floor space and create a functional work triangle for the first time in the kitchen's history. Soffit removal exposed space for full-height cabinets to the ceiling, more than replacing the storage lost by eliminating the peninsula.

We modeled two layout options in 3D within a week of the initial consultation. The homeowners could see immediately that Option B — with the island replacing the peninsula at a 90-degree reorientation — solved the traffic flow without requiring any structural changes. They approved the design and we moved to the construction document set. The remodel itself was completed in 11 days. The design phase saved an estimated $3,200 in potential change orders by catching the refrigerator clearance issue before the cabinet order was placed.

Common Questions

Kitchen Design FAQs

The questions Mankato homeowners ask most often before starting the kitchen design process.

What does the kitchen design process include in Mankato?

Our kitchen design process starts with a free in-home consultation where we measure your existing kitchen, discuss your goals, and review your budget range. From there we produce a scaled floor plan with cabinet placement, appliance locations, and traffic flow mapped out. For most remodels we also produce a 3D rendered visualization so you can see the finished kitchen before any product is ordered or any wall is touched. The design package includes all drawings needed for permit submission, cabinet orders, countertop templates, and contractor coordination.

Do I need a kitchen designer or can I design it myself?

Many Mankato homeowners attempt to design their own kitchen using online tools or big-box store layout apps — and many end up making costly changes mid-project when something does not work as expected. Common issues include cabinet runs that do not close out properly, refrigerator doors that swing into walkways, and island placements that create traffic dead-ends. A professional kitchen designer accounts for the work triangle, code-required clearances, venting paths, and cabinet module sizing before anything is ordered. The cost of design services is almost always recovered in avoided change orders and material waste.

How much does kitchen design cost in Mankato?

For clients who hire us to execute the full remodel, kitchen design and 3D visualization are included in the project at no separate charge. For homeowners who want design-only services — drawings, renders, and specifications they will take to another contractor — our design fee starts at $600 for a basic floor plan and scales based on kitchen size and complexity. Most full design packages with 3D renderings and construction documents run $900–$1,800. We discuss the scope and fee during your free initial consultation so you know exactly what you are getting before any commitment is made.

Can you redesign a small or awkward Mankato kitchen?

Small and awkward kitchens are where good design matters most. A 90-square-foot galley kitchen near downtown Mankato has very different constraints than a wide open layout in a newer build — and the wrong cabinet configuration or island placement in a tight space makes a bad kitchen worse, not better. We specialize in working within the constraints of older Southern Minnesota homes, including low ceilings, irregular wall angles, plaster walls that complicate cabinet mounting, and outdated electrical that needs to be worked around or upgraded during the design phase. The 3D rendering step is especially valuable in tight spaces because it makes overcrowding problems visible before construction begins.

How long does kitchen design take before construction starts?

After your free in-home measurement visit, we typically deliver an initial floor plan within 5–7 business days. 3D renderings follow within 3–5 business days after the floor plan is approved. Once you sign off on the design, we place all product orders and schedule trades — the design-to-construction gap is usually 4–10 weeks depending on cabinet lead times. We build this into your overall project timeline from the start so there are no surprises about when your kitchen will be under construction. For clients with flexible timing, the design approval phase can happen as far in advance as needed, which often means better trade availability and shorter overall wait times.
